Before changing the installed app
Confirm the sign-in method and recovery route while the current app is still accessible. Record the app version and the account identifier for your own records. A guest session may depend on local data; use the publisher’s documented account-linking method before any removal.
Match an update to the same app
Check publisher, package identity and signing continuity. Android uses the app’s signing identity when accepting updates; changing the app icon does not make a different package a valid update. Compare the release information described in the version guide.
Apply the publisher-supported update
- Use the same trusted distribution source where possible.
- Complete the update download and allow the installer to finish.
- Open the app and confirm the account shown is the one you intended.
- Read the release notes for changed controls, requirements or permissions.
If the update is rejected
A file can fail because it is incomplete, incompatible or signed differently from the installed application. Removing the old app immediately can lose locally stored data. First save recovery details and ask the publisher how that package should be updated.
Before considering a downgrade
An older build can be blocked by a newer server or installation policy. A downgrade also does not reverse an account restriction or repair an incorrect sign-in method. Use the specific error or account guide for the actual problem.
